The French chemist Louis Pasteur and the German doctor Robert Koch, twenty years his junior, are the most prominent pioneers in the field of microbiology. Their groundwork allowed an initial understanding of infectious disease and impacted upon the further development of medical science up until the 20th century. Pasteur and Koch were rivals as both were leading figures in their fields of research and lived in fiercely competitive countries.
